Silviculture & Agroforestry
The department of Silviculture and Agroforestry came into existence in 2016 under CoHF with a viewpoint of creating an enriched open source of sustainable trained human resource ready to take up the responsibilities of accelerating all round growth of the Forestry & Agroforestry sector in the country. Department offers silviculture and agroforestry related courses in UG and PG level. M.Sc. (Forestry) and PhD Forestry in Silviculture and Agroforestry began in 2019-20 and 2022-23 respectively. The Department has developed Neem, Anjan, Bamboo, and Triphala agroforestry models with agricultural, horticultural, and medicinal crops. Similarly, Industrial agroforestry models for Gmelina arborea, Melia dubia, Neolamarckia cadamba, Ailanthus excelsa, Dalbergia sissoo, Mahogany, Sandal and others also developed. A forest nursery with net house, polyhouse, and ELP unit for nursery trials and ELP/ project work is running to give horticulture and forestry students an understanding of the subject and sector. Department aims at excellence in education at undergraduate and postgraduate level along with research and extension on relevant and current issues of forestry and agroforestry. Currently the department is having 5 external projects under RKVY, UPCST, UPCAR and other agencies with Rs. 3.00 crore on various aspects of forestry. Further we also engaged in an extension programme to demonstrate Agroforestry models on farmers’ fields for the last 3-4 years. The thrust area of department are:
- Selection and Prioritization of promising trees & shrubs including lesser-known timber species (LKTS) and Bamboos in Bundelkhand region for plantation
- Availability of quality seeds and planting materials for afforestation and agroforestry purpose
- Advocating of Precision silviculture, industrial agroforestry, carbon forestry and Ecosystem services
- Development of climate smart agroforestry models for different regions of Bundelkhand and other parts of the country
- Tree – crop interaction and soil-water & nutrient management studies in different agroforestry systems and
- Development of different afforestation techniques for degraded and problematic areas targeting soil & water conservation.
